A common question: how are you actually supposed to keep your lashes clean while they’re bonded underneath your natural lashes?

It’s a fair question. When several natural lashes are sitting beneath one lash cluster, you obviously can’t scrub between every single lash the same way you could with completely bare lashes. But that doesn’t mean your lashes can’t be properly cleaned while wearing DIY lashes.

What are you actually cleaning?

When it comes to lash hygiene, the most important area to keep clean is your lash line and the base of your natural lashes.

Throughout the day, things like oils, makeup, skincare, dead skin and everyday buildup can collect around the lash line. This is why regular cleansing is so important, whether you wear traditional lash extensions, DIY lashes or nothing at all.

When DIY lashes are applied properly, they should sit slightly away from the skin rather than being glued directly onto the lash line. This leaves room to gently cleanse around the base of the lashes.

Using a gentle, oil-free lash cleanser and a soft cleansing brush can help remove buildup while still being gentle around your DIY lashes.

Can cleanser get between every lash?

Not necessarily, and that’s okay.

Because multiple natural lashes can sit underneath one DIY lash cluster, you won’t be able to physically scrub between every individual lash while your set is being worn. Instead, the goal is to keep the lash line and surrounding area clean throughout the wear period, then give your natural lashes a more thorough cleanse once your DIY lashes are removed. This is also why we don’t recommend trying to keep one application on for weeks at a time.

Why we recommend removing and reapplying your DIY lashes

Your natural lashes are constantly moving through their growth cycle. Individual lashes naturally shed and are replaced by new ones. With traditional lash extensions, an extension is typically attached to one natural lash, so when that natural lash sheds, the extension usually sheds with it.

DIY lashes are different because one lash cluster can be bonded across multiple natural lashes. This means a naturally shed lash may occasionally remain within the set until your DIY lashes are removed.

For that reason, we recommend wearing your Citizen Lash DIY lashes for up to 5 days before removing them, thoroughly cleansing your natural lashes and reapplying a fresh set. Even if your lashes still look great, giving them that regular reset allows you to properly cleanse the entire lash area and respect your natural lash growth cycle.

Are Citizen Lash DIY lashes resuable?

Yes! Our DIY lashes were designed to be washable and reusable, which means you don’t have to choose between good lash hygiene and getting multiple wears out of your lashes.

Once removed, you can thoroughly cleanse your natural lashes as well as your DIY lashes before reapplying them. We would always rather see you remove, cleanse and reapply than try to stretch one continuous application for as long as possible.

How to clean your lashes while wearing DIY lashes

For the best results:

  1. Use a gentle, oil-free lash cleanser.
  2. Apply the cleanser carefully around the lash line.
  3. Use a soft lash cleansing brush to gently work around the base of the lashes.
  4. Rinse thoroughly without pulling or rubbing at your DIY lashes.
  5. Gently pat the area dry and allow your lashes to fully dry.

Avoid aggressively scrubbing or pulling at the lashes, as this can affect both retention and your natural lashes.

Healthy lashes come first

We love good retention, but maximum retention should never come at the expense of lash hygiene or your natural lash cycle.

Keeping your lash line clean while wearing your DIY lashes, removing them regularly and giving both your natural lashes and DIY lashes a thorough cleanse before reapplying is the best way to enjoy your lashes while keeping lash health in mind.

And yes, you can absolutely wash your lashes while wearing your Citizen Lash DIY lashes ♡
